Digby Playground in eastern New Orleans is the latest city-owned park to get an overhaul from volunteers, thanks to the New Orleans Fire Department, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, SFG Krewe and the New York District Council of Carpenters.
24nord2Digby Playground, pictured last January, was in desperate need of repairs.

(A number of members of the New York District Council of Carpenters, a building professionals group, are active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and coordinated with local members to help bring these efforts to fruition.)
Representatives from the organizations joined Mayor Mitch Landrieu this morning, who called the project a "great example of the spirit of volunteerism in New Orleans."

After raising money for the project, the group has been renovating the park's multi-purpose center by painting the facility and replacing the roof, plumbing and electrical wiring. The volunteers are also working on the baseball field, reconditioning or replacing the dugout, aluminum bleachers and fencing.

Gerry Crimmins, who died in October of liver cancer, signs a beam at Engine 38 fire house in New Orleans in August, 2009. The Digby Playground renovation was done in his honor.
