The Gift Of Giving

George E. Safiol

Congratulations graduates!

Congratulations to all those who graduated.  We dusted off a legendary rendition of Violet, Flower of NYU just for you.  Just imagine back then before the university saddled people with sky high debt causing embittered alumni.  You know, back when NYU fielded a top DI hoops team, and a hipster was an just easily avoided odd guy who spoke a lot of weird slang and hung out in jazz clubs.

Underneath the foliage, in its bower set
Loveliest of the flowers of spring
Blooms the violet

Violet, violet, flower of N.Y.U.

We will ever sing thy praise
To thee we'll ere be true

We'll be true

You're So Right. Fraternities and Sororities are USELESS.

Sorority or fraternity membership helps keep students in college. Students who belong to a sorority or fraternity are more likely to stay in college than other students.

Alumni members achieve success. College graduates who belong to a sorority or fraternity tend to be more significantly successful financially than other college graduates.

Sorority and fraternity alumni give more to alma maters. Research shows colleges receive more gifts, and in greater amounts, from sorority and fraternity alumni.

Greek students are more active on campus and in community activities.  Student members tend to participate significantly more often in co, curricular campus activities, including, of course, their membership in a sorority or fraternity, than do other students.

Sorority and fraternity members also nurture their "social capital," involvement in the community, in later years.  The study indicates that sorority and fraternity alumni take part more often in volunteer organizations and charitable activities than others do.

Why consider Greek membership? Joining a fraternity or sorority is an individual decision. Greek life is not for everyone. Just as every student is unique, each of the Greek groups is unique and different from the others.

Part of the decision a student makes regarding Greek membership is discovering which group will match the student's needs, as well as be receptive to what the individual student has to offer the Greek organization.

Greek membership and residing in a Greek living, unit does offer the student the advantage of belonging to a smaller group within the larger campus environment. The chapters interact with each other in daily living situations, study together and plan leisure activities together. In other words, there are at least 50 plus other students on campus who share a common bond with each other, and they in turn help students to link up with other friends Greek and non Greek.

Rating the value of the college experience: Research shows that sorority and fraternity alumni members rated the "overall value of the college experience" at the same level as other graduates and have higher ratings than other alumni to their college social experience.

The Greek Community provides opportunities to develop 12 of those key factors employers are looking for, including: Real, World Experience; Leadership Qualities; Personal Presentation; Attitude; Communication Skills; Computer Skills; Problem Solving; Customer, Service Orientation; Adaptability, Drive, Initiative; Proven Track Record; Ability to Learn; Preparation for Interviews.

We're Smart! On average, the all, sorority and fraternity GPA consistently exceeds the all, women's, men's and campus averages. We're Diverse! Fraternities and sororities represent the rich diversity of most campus populations.

We're Responsible! Members who make commitments to themselves and their chapters prove to be among the University's most well respected students and most loyal Alumni.

We Help Others! Fraternity and sorority members participate in countless hours ofcommunity service and contribute annually to charitable organizations.

We're Leaders! Greek men and women are involved in an array of campus activities, are often the most visible campus leaders, and are the most enthusiastic supporters of University events.

We Don't Haze! Hazing is prohibited; it's against the Law, and it is enforced... plain and simple! Educational seminars and presentations are given to members in meetings and forums that outline the definition and consequences of this illegal activity.

We're Affordable! Greek Life is an investment in your future! Chapters help members to plan, budget and afford to participate in Greek Life.

We're Not All Rich! Greek members are not wealthy! Men and women in sororities and fraternities maintain jobs and internships, receive finanacial aid, and obtain in, chapter scholarships to afford their college education.

We Network! Fraternity men and sorority women are afforded networking opportunities through Greek alumni for job assistance and advice, internship exposure and experience, and general direction when entering the work force.

We Have Fun! Greeks have fun! Sorority and fraternity members maintain a balance between the classroom and personal time. Events such as date parties, retreats, formals and parent weekends are just a few of the activities offered.

As Alumni, Greeks give approximately 75% of all money donated to universities. As undergraduates, Greeks raise approximately $7 million per year for charities.

All Greek Chapters Were Founded on the Principal of Scholastic Excellence, Community Service, and the Principals of Brotherhood/Sisterhood.

Rush Kappa Sig (Finding only the best men and getting 'em to join the team.)

College fraternity brothers at Kappa Sigma discussing the topic of brotherhood during rush week, 196?.

DROP US A LINE AT KAPPASIGMANYUatMAIL.COM

JOIN RUSH KAPPA SIG (the group will be open to look around for a couple of days but usually you have to join.  If anything it is entertaining enough to be worthwhile.)

Description:

Psst! It's the Official Kappa Sigma NYU Rush Group. Come On and Join It. You know you want to. It's okay!

"The Star and Crescent shall not be worn by every man, but only by him who is worthy to wear it. He must be a gentleman... a man of honor and courage... a man of zeal, yet humble... an intelligent man...a man of truth... one who tempers action with wisdom and, above all else, one who walks in the light of God."

We have the tradition, the size, the selectivity, the alum, the programs, the parties, the retreats, the outings, the national presence, the prestige and the respect. Kappa Sig is the epitome of "fraternity". NYU since 1871.

Doesn't hurt that we are the LEAST EXPENSIVE fraternity BOTH BY DUES AND BY PLEDGE FEES, thanks to KΣ being a big fraternity with prosperous and caring brothers.

Has the biggest Scholarship Program $250,000 among all fraternities. (We are the 5th largest fraternity so that also helps your odds.)

WHY WE KNOW YOU WILL FIT IN PERFECTLY. You-

• Like to Laugh, Party and Have a Good Time
• Want to Accomplish Things and Help Others
• Get Along with Others
• Are Confident in Yourself
• Are Willing to be Confident in Those Around You
• Keep Trust and Honor a Commitment
• Lead by Example and by Inspiring Others
• Welcome Being Led by Example and Inspired by Others
• Want to Build Up Not Tear Down
• Can Bring Something to Us to Make Us Better While We Do the Same for You
• Like the “Bad Guys“ in most 80’s Movies; Thought the “Good Guys” were Dorks and the Endings Lame
• Love Murka

WHY WE KNOW YOU WANT TO JOIN. We offer-
• True Brotherhood - Make friendships that last. We are brothers for LIFE.
• Extensive Networking – It's often about who you know. Kappa Sigma has prominent alumni locally and nationwide.
• A truly National Fraternity with brothers everywhere, on every block and every chair.
• Work with Great Philanthropies - We really go all out to help the community.
• Opportunities to have fun and meet people. Brothers get to the best spots, Own bars and restaurants and have some fun events, reinforcing our bonds in the process. We Play Hard.
• Brothers Work at the Best Firms and the Best Companies. We Work Hard.
• A Brotherhood with meaning. The process is challenging but not demeaning or harmful.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT KAPPA SIGMA at NYU...

Jeffrey Ayres (KΣ Colony): "We've got brothers from Dixie to Dubai. No 'paper letters' here; definitely real brotherhood for life."

Amie Dietz NYU CAS '13: "They got the hook ups. And the definition of Fratastic."

Eric Harmon NYU Law '13: "Never heard of 'em."

Phil Phillips NYU Steinhart '12: "Who do they think they are?"

Derek Fears NYU CAS '11: "My girlfriend was telling me about them. Well, my ex-girlfriend."

Apple Thornton FIT '08: "My boss is a Kappa Sig. He is always calling in 'sick' to play golf, to go fly fishing or to go on 'Old Boy' Alumni and Glory Days Alumni-Active vacations, leaving me with all the work. But he's really a great guy!"

Greg Parker KΣ Colony, NYU Stern '11: "We just try to 'handle our business' you know. No, not that way. Jerk."

Spring recruitment is in full swing with KΣ (Kappa Sigma) at NYU (Gamma-Zeta).  The guys have just had some events and we are looking to get you involved. If you think you want to make this happen, join the group and we'll go from there.  (It may take some time to be "approved" by the group administrators, etc. as we look at our numbers and look in our Book of I Ching to make sure we achieve harmonious balance.) You knew some of us as the DC and G-Z, or maybe you are just getting to know us.

We draw from all over the university- Undergraduate programs, Graduate and Professional schools-- Law school, Medical school, Stern graduate, CAS, GSAS, Stern, Steinhardt, Schack IRE... The benefits and engagement we offer are not focused on student life but for a whole lifetime. We have a great range of activities and involvement for the undergraduate, graduate and alumni.

Regarding IFC and OSA:

"Does the Brotherhood exist? That, you will never know. If we choose to set you free when we have finished with you, if you live to be ninety years old, still you will never learn whether the answer to that question is yes or no. As long as you live, it will be a riddle in your mind."  -George Orwell, 1984

Seriously, we are one of a number of organizations operating with recognition of our fraternity's national office (SEC) without being members of IFC.We support fraternity and sorority life 100% and have great relations with IFC and Non-IFC groups and Greek life. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) has put a moratorium on recognition and funding for fraternal groups. So we aren't just doing things however we want to step on toes and get our way-  It's about keeping up 140 years of KΣ (Gamma-Zeta) tradition in the NYU community. Some Important Facts About Fraternities

• A majority of the 600 NIC fraternity chapters are above the All-Men's scholastic average.
• 76% of our nation's Senators are Greek alumni.
• 40 of 47 U.S. Supreme Court Justices since 1910 were fraternity men.
• 85% of the top executives in the Fortune 500, including ...CEO's of 43 of the top 50 companies (six of those were not educated in the U.S.)
• 71% of the men listed in Who's Who in America are Fraternity men.
• All but three U.S. Presidents in the last century were Fraternity men.
• Over 85% of the student leaders on some 730 campuses are involved in the Greek community.
• A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non-fraternity/sorority persons graduate.
• Less than 0.25% (that's less than a quarter of percent for you non math majors) of an NYU student's expenses go toward fraternity dues.
• Incidentally, a trustee and dean of the University are Kappa Sigma's and several are members of other fraternities. (No, they aren't going to change your grade or your tuition but they're great guys.) Conclusion: You Can Succeed Without Having the Benefits of Being In a Fraternity But Statistics Show It is Far Less Likely.

Digby Playground in eastern New Orleans gets overhaul, thanks to firefighters, fraternity

Digby Playground in eastern New Orleans is the latest city-owned park to get an overhaul from volunteers, thanks to the New Orleans Fire Department, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, SFG Krewe and the New York District Council of Carpenters.
24nord2Digby Playground, pictured last January, was in desperate need of repairs.

(A number of members of the New York District Council of Carpenters, a building professionals group, are active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and coordinated with local members to help bring these efforts to fruition.)
Representatives from the organizations joined Mayor Mitch Landrieu this morning, who called the project a "great example of the spirit of volunteerism in New Orleans."

After raising money for the project, the group has been renovating the park's multi-purpose center by painting the facility and replacing the roof, plumbing and electrical wiring. The volunteers are also working on the baseball field, reconditioning or replacing the dugout, aluminum bleachers and fencing.
